Invitation to the 23rd Scientific Meeting of

The Scandinavian Society for Research in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Geilo, Norway, February 7-9, 2013

November 28, 2012

Dear Colleague,

The Scandinavian Society for Research in Cardiothoracic Surgery (SSRCTS) will hold its annual Scientific Meeting in Geilo, Norway, in February of 2013. Last year we had over 60 participants with more than 30 abstracts presented at the meeting, the majority of which were oral presentations. It has been a pleasure to see how the young researchers have kept up the quality of the abstracts and presentations – giving a thorough overview of ongoing research in Scandinavia.

The idea of the meeting is to combine basic and clinical research within the field of cardiothoracic surgery and give our young scientists the opportunity to present their academic work. At the same time this gives them opportunities to build up their networks and meet with colleagues from other countries. For the 2012 meeting we had participants from all Scandinavian countries, UK and Germany and we will work hard to keep our meeting interesting for the cardiothoracic milieu throughout Europe.

Our Clinical Main Topic this year will focus on coronary revascularisation. Professor Pieter Kappetein, Rotterdam, has accepted our invitation and will give a talk on coronary artery bypass surgery in the light of Syntax study. There will also be a cardiologist point of view on the same topic by Professor Rune Wiseth from Trondheim. The Main Basic Science Topic will be: The mitochondrion: when your best friend becomes your worst enemy. The speakers are Professor Fabio di Lisa from Padova and Marte Bliksøen from Oslo. The Postgraduate course will continue from last year meeting on the topic of how to write a good paper. Professor Jarle Vaage will give his view on “How to publish a paper in a major scientific journal”, based on his long experience as author, reviewer and editor in major cardiothoracic scientific journals. There will be two invited lectures, one by Professor Anders Jeppsson from Gothenburg: Bleeding problems in cardiac surgery – an update; and a lecture from Aarhus on congenital heart disease in adults (GUCH) is also in the pipeline.

There will be a wet-lab as usual where the participants can practice aortic valve replacement on pig heart under guidance of experienced surgeons.

The deadline for abstracts is 15th of December 2012 and the registration and hotel booking will be open until 15th of January 2013. For the next SSRCTS annual meeting there will for the first time be a registration fee; this due to regulations that prevent most companies to sponsor our meeting. The registration fee for the 2013 meeting will be 750 NOK.  Please visit our new web-site: www.ssrcts.org for any additional information. We will look forward to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to contact us via email or phone in order to discuss any matter regarding the meeting.

Lots of thanks in advance,
