26th Annual Meeting program and abstracts
February 11–13 2016

Dear Colleagues and friends,

We welcome you to the 26th Annual Scientific Meeting of The Scandinavian Society for Research in Cardio-thoracic Surgery (SSRCTS) in Geilo that will be held from 11th to 13th of February 2016. Last year we celebrated the 25th anniversary of our small society, established in 1990 as a “daughter society” to the Scandinavian Association of Thoracic Surgery (SATS). Last September at the SATS meeting in Bergen, Professor Vibeke Hjortdal from Århus, Denmark, was elected as the new president of the SSRCTS. Vibeke is succeeding me as I took over the post as the Secretary General of SATS. Vibeke has over the years been very active in bringing her students to Geilo and we are very happy that she is willing to take SSRCTS further into the future. Due to personal commitments Vibeke could not participate or organize the 2016 meeting, and thus the 2016 meeting is still directed by Mari-Liis and me, “the good old team” of the past 10 years.

This year we have accepted 42 abstracts that will either be presented as oral lectures or poster presentations. This year we will also have a special session with oral presentations on studies with pending results. As before, our goal is to combine basic and clinical research within the field of cardiothoracic surgery and at the same give our participants an overview of ongoing research in Scandinavia.

Our invited guests for our 26th annual meeting in 2016 are renowned international scientists and surgeons: Professor Unnur Valdimarsdottir from Reykjavik will lecture on stress and cardiac disease. She is also an internationally renowned epidemiologic researcher both in Reykjavik and at Karolinska Institutet. Dr. Ivy Modrau from Århus will lecture on hybrid revascularisation and Dr. Arnar Geirsson, working both in Reykjavik and at Yale in US, will provide us with his experience on robotic MIDCAB operation. Professor Magnús Karl Magnússon will lecture on how lungs can be grown in the laboratory and Dr. Stuart Head from Rotterdam on the clinical use of SYNTAX score. He will also have a special lecture on survival and risk factor analysis. Finally Gudný Helga Herbertsdóttir will tell us how to get our research out to the media and general public.

There will also be “pompous” speeches at the Gala Dinner on Saturday. As for the 2015 meeting, there will be a registration fee of 800 NOK; and this fee can be paid on-site in Geilo, or even after the meeting. Please visit our web-site: www.ssrcts.org for any additional information.

Tómas Gudbjartsson
